Peregrine Falcon
Falco peregrinus
Field Observations
Waited for three hours near the abandoned quarry overlook before this magnificent sub-adult raptor swooped down onto a rocky ledge. The cloud cover gave a perfectly soft light, letting me capture the sharp contrast of its dark hood and beautiful barred chest feathers as it preened before taking off.
Habitat & Ecological Profile
A highly adaptable cosmopolitan bird of prey, found across open landscapes, coastal cliffs, mountain ranges, and increasingly on urban skyscrapers where tall structures mimic natural nesting ledges.
Distinctive Behaviors
Renowned as the fastest animal on earth, utilizing high-velocity hunting dives known as 'stoops' where it folds its wings and drops from great heights, reaching aerial speeds exceeding 320 km/h to strike prey mid-air.
